More than 300 new Illinois laws will take effect on Jan. 1, 2024.

They cover a range of topics from public health to public education, pet adoptions, and drug education.

IL Min Wage Increase

-increase to $14/hr for non-tipped workers

-$8.40/hr for tipped workers

-$12/hr for youths under 18 working less than 650 hours per calendar year

Paid Leave for All Workers Act

Starting Jan 1, 2024 – Employers must provide employees with up to 40 hours of paid leave during a 12-month period

**APPLIES EVEN IF YOU HAVE LESS THAN 5 EMPLOYEES

-Must offer to ALL employees, even part-time and seasonal

Child Extended Bereavement Act

Beginning January 1, 2024 – guarantees additional weeks of bereavement leave to employees who lose a child to homicide or suicide.

-An employer with 250 or more full-time employees must provide 12 weeks of unpaid leave.

-An employer with between 50 and 250 full-time employees must provide 6 weeks of unpaid leave.

Pay Data Reporting

Amendments to the Illinois Equal Pay Act will require most Illinois employers with 100 or more employees to report certain demographic and wage data to the State’s Department of Labor by March 23, 2024.

Worker’s Compensation

Employers face increased risks for failing to carry worker’s compensation insurance

–Required once you have 1 employee

Newly constructed homes or residential buildings must have one electric vehicle-capable electrical outlet in the parking space for each residential unit.

Landlords will be required to rent or sell property to undocumented migrants.

Homeowners and renters insurance companies cannot refuse coverage for certain breeds of dogs.

Evanston Fair Work Week

-Employers in certain industries are required to provide 14-day notice to employees of a schedule change
